From top to bottom, Cherokee Purple, Black Prince and Big Beef. The colors of the heirlooms are amazing. I didn’t know a carrot could get so big. They are not tender and sweet, but they are fresh, organic, and plentiful. I call a “share” the harvest for the week. A Community Supported Agriculture farm frequently offers its supporting members a share in exchange for a fee. I previously bought a share in the Ambrose family farm on Johns Island. I really enjoyed their vegetables and was inspired to try to grow my own. This is the [...] The harvest was light this week. The first squash planting was destroyed. I am working on a second planting. The lettuce is getting too bitter to eat. On the bright side, the tomatoes are increasing, and the carrots are holding steady. There are little cucumbers on the vine, hopefully they will ripen soon. The first Big [...] While several cherry tomatoes have been harvested, last night was the first night I brought in a larger size tomato, a Cherokee Purple. I set it on the kitchen counter, and tonight did a ripeness test. There was some give, so I did a taste test! While on the small size, it was big on [...] And it is a Cherokee Purple. The Big Beef and the Tomosa are right behind it. This Cherokee Purple is from seed I started. It was so pathetically small when I set it out, I doubted it would make it. It was one-third the size of a Cherokee Purple I bought from the local garden center. I had no confidence at all that the plant I had started would make it, [...] |
